Censuur

Vlak na de inval van Rusland in de Oekraïne werd voor heel Europa de toegang tot informatie van populaire Russische nieuwssites ontzegd door aanpassingen in de Europese DNS servers. Dit op order van de ongekozen president van de EU, Ursula von der Leyden. De internationale DNS servers linken trouwens nog wel door.

Daarvoor was het domein van de Iraanse Nieuwssite PressTV door de Amerikaanse overheid al geconfisqueerd. Enige weken geleden waren SouthFront en New Eastern Outlook aan de beurt.

Ook werden er, zelfs al voor het corona gebeuren, regelmatig YouTube kanalen met politiek onwelgevallige inhoud gecanceld. Op Twitter werd zelfs, naast vele anderen, de Amerikaanse president geblokt. Tijdens de corona werden ook alle dissidenten geblokt of ge-shadowbanned.

Dit is natuurlijk allemaal censuur en wordt gebruikt om sommige informatie wel toe te laten en andere niet om het wereldbeeld van de publiek opinie te sturen.

Recht van toegang tot informatie

Het is natuurlijk ons recht om toegang tot alle informatie te hebben. Om een afgewogen keuze te kunnen maken welke ideeën wel en welke niet te volgen. Doe je dat niet dan kom je bedrogen uit. Zie de processen van Neurenberg vlak na WOII.

Politiek, met de keuze van je vertegenwoordiger die iets anders doet dan wat die zegt of economisch met een huis vol spullen waar je niets mee doet.

De basis van het onderscheidingsvermogen is de toegang tot informatie. Informatie van “buiten” en informatie van “binnen” is nodig voor de spiegelfunctie, de cyclus van manifestatie waarmee je je ontwikkelt.

Free speech

Om die spiegelfunctie optimaal te laten functioneren is het ook nodig dat je je vrij kunt uitspreken, zonder op je tenen te hoeven lopen in de angst iets verkeerd te zeggen. Zo onthoud je je medemensen van hun spiegel die zij nodig hebben om zich te ontwikkelen.

De Verklaring van Westminster

Een groep van lieden met een zeer gevarieerde achtergrond vond het nodig om gezamenlijk te waarschuwen. De langzaam steeds verdergaande censuur vorderde. En op 18 oktober 2023 verscheen de  The Westminster Declaration onder het motto:

“Open discourse is the central pillar of a free society”

“We write as journalists, artists, authors, activists, technologists, and academics to warn of increasing international censorship that threatens to erode centuries-old democratic norms.

Coming from the left, right, and centre, we are united by our commitment to universal human rights and freedom of speech, and we are all deeply concerned about attempts to label protected speech as ‘misinformation,’ ‘disinformation,’ and other ill-defined terms.

This abuse of these terms has resulted in the censorship of ordinary people, journalists, and dissidents in countries all over the world.

Such interference with the right to free speech suppresses valid discussion about matters of urgent public interest, and undermines the foundational principles of representative democracy.”

“We do not want our children to grow up in a world where they live in fear of speaking their minds.”

“We want them to grow up in a world where their ideas can be expressed, explored and debated openly – a world that the founders of our democracies envisioned when they enshrined free speech into our laws and constitutions.”

They urged governments and tech companies to comply with Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
“Everyone has the right to freedom of opinion and expression; this right includes freedom to hold opinions without interference and to seek, receive and impart information and ideas through any media and regardless of frontiers.”

In conclusion, the declaration also called on the general public. “Build an atmosphere of free speech from the ground up by rejecting the climate of intolerance that encourages self-censorship.” 

Het moge duidelijk zijn dat Wunjo! deze verklaring uitdrukkelijk ondersteunt.
